Visit your DMV

A friend of mine, who is a doctor, once posited that people are far more stupid than most smart people realize. We lead insulated lives, interacting with other smart people, reading blogs, debating philosophy, etc, etc.
The average person isn't very bright. Go down to the local DMV. It's a truly random sample of the population -- everyone has to go down and stand in line at some point. Of course we're eliminating the people that can't get it together enough to own a car, but that just reinforces the point.
The average person waiting in line at the DMV isn't too bright. Jerry Springer is a reality show to a lot of people. Just look at the life choices many people make.
Now ponder this. Since those people are average, doesn't that mean that at least half the people are below that level?
In the words of the great Jerry Hathaway from Real Genius:
So the next time Reid and Pelosi go on about how the people have spoken on Iraq, think of a field of carrots. Fat, dumb, lazy, emotional, sissified carrots.

There's something you're going to have to understand. Compared to you, most people have the I.Q. of a carrot. We're different than most people, Mitch . . . better.
