Dad's Army...

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

It's an Aussie phrase, and dates back to WWI, but it's a fond phrase as well as a politically loaded one. It refers to using older men on the front line b/c the young ones have all been killed. WWI history buffs will understand that reference.

But the net-net is that the Diggers are going to allow fit(ish) citizens up to 55 to enlist.
Dr Nelson said there were a variety of desk jobs and roles in logistic support, medical, nursing, legal, educational and language services that could be filled by older personnel.
I wish we could do that in the US. They relaxed the armed forces ages a few years ago but still missed me by two years.

I'll tell you this - if they allowed over-40's to enlist, I would quit my job tomorrow and enlist. I suspect they'd take me (heck, I can bench more than when I was 20 and run darn near as far, if not quite as fast) for my technical skills is nothing else.

Not for nothing, we got plenty of brave brave young 'uns to do the pointy-end of the stick stuff, but there is a role for older people with life experience and the ability to remain calm in the face of stupid human tricks. Parenting helps with those skills. :-O)

I'm sending a copy of this article to my congress people, senators, and some of the presidential candidates.

I've been saying this for YEARS. I'd join up myself - I have many skills that could benefit the military - but I'm also considered "too old".

The Guard allows you to enlist up until 42. I believe that may also apply in the active force.
